What’s your major? What do you want to do with it? What do you enjoy? What are you good at? These are questions you’ve probably heard throughout high school and since arriving at App State. For many students, they can feel overwhelming. First, it’s important to know that it’s okay not to have all the answers.
We’re here to help you take practical steps toward clarifying your academic and career direction. Career coaches are available to support students – whether you are in Boone, Hickory or online – offering guidance that meets you where you are in the process. Our team will work with you through a thoughtful self-discovery process focused on your interests, skills, values, and personality. Through career coaching, self-assessment tools, and career research, you’ll gain a better understanding of how your strengths connect to different career paths and life settings.
🔎 Research careers
A significant first step is to explore the types of careers a major can lead to and the skills one needs to be successful in these fields. Discover the types of internships and employers related to each major. Then, set up a time to meet with a career coach or come to our Career Studio to take one of our career assessments and go over your options. Career coaches/guides can help you research information, including related career titles, daily work tasks, relevant skills, job outlook, salary, trends, training, etc. You can utilize many resources to research majors, careers, and employers.
🎓 Post-graduation options
After earning your undergraduate degree, you can continue your education and expand your skill set. Consider advancing your expertise through graduate school to delve deeper into your chosen field. Alternatively, service and gap year programs are available to gain valuable experiences shaping your personal and professional growth. Talk to a career coach to learn more about these opportunities.
