We’re hiring: Research Scientist, Environmental and Public Health Field Data

The NHERI RAPID Facility at the University of Washington is hiring a full-time temporary Research Scientist to support environmental and public health data collection after natural hazard events.

This is a hands-on, applied research role for someone who wants work that combines field deployment, analytical instruments, environmental sampling, public health, GIS, technical documentation, training, logistics, and collaboration with researchers responding to disasters.

In this position, you will help research teams collect hard-to-get data in complex field settings. You will learn and support technical equipment, develop workflows, contribute to SOPs and training materials, assist with deployment logistics, and help turn partially defined research needs into practical field methods.

Relevant backgrounds include:

  • Environmental science or environmental engineering
  • Public health, environmental health, or industrial hygiene
  • Chemistry, environmental chemistry, or chemical engineering
  • Earth science, biology, geography, GIS, natural resources, or related fields

Experience with any of the following would be especially useful:

  • GC/MS, XRF, optical spectroscopy, or hyperspectral imaging
  • Environmental sampling or public health monitoring
  • GIS or geospatial field data collection
  • Field safety, natural hazards reconnaissance, or disaster research logistics
  • Technical documentation, SOPs, training, or equipment workflows

This role is a good fit for someone who likes learning new technical systems, working across disciplines, solving practical field problems, and supporting research with real-world public health and environmental applications.

Pay range: $81,600 to $96,000 annually

Location: University of Washington, Seattle

Application deadline: June 12, 2026

Job ID: REQ-0000132958
