Location: Hickory

Supervisor: Alex Simpson, Hickory Library & Information Commons Director

This position involves working at the Hickory Library & Information Commons Service Desk starting Winter 2026. It is a heavy customer service based position.

  • Providing high-level customer service at the service desk during library hours
  • Providing assistance with navigating library catalog, checkout and return of library materials, and reviewing patron account information
  • Assist with the stocking and monitoring of the Food Hub
  • Communicating with students, faculty, and staff to assist them with Hickory Campus information, locating physical library materials, and routine research questions
  • Assist with printing, scanning, copying, and basic technology questions
  • Referring patrons to appropriate library resources, services, and personnel
  • Referring patrons to other areas and personnel at the Hickory Campus
  • Supporting our book request and delivery program
  • Assisting with library openings and closings during night hours and reporting facility related problems when they arise
  • Shelving: arranging books in the Library of Congress call number order on the shelves
  • Shelf reading: checking books to make sure that they are in the correct call number order
  • Shifting: physically moving books from point A to point B, while keeping them in correct call number order
  • Searching: locating missing books
  • Observing of University Libraries policies and reporting as needed to Hickory Campus personnel
  • Assist with special projects as needed and time permitting. Additional duties as assigned

Required qualifications include:

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Close attention to detail
  • Effective organization skills
  • Basic fluency in computer technology

Position will earn $11.00/hour
